Gas attacks on ATMs arrived in the UK in 2013, since when there had been nearly 150 attacks by Autumn 2015. In these attacks, criminal gangs inject an explosive gas into the ATM, with the aim of igniting it and blowing the safe door off the back of the machine and stealing the cash.

This highly dangerous practice has already cost the industry a substantial seven-figure sum and it is purely through good fortune that no-one has been seriously hurt.

To counter this threat, Lockpoint teamed up with Gexcon, a world leader in the understanding of explosions.

Theoretical testing by Gexcon showed that Lockpoint’s Gryphon would withstand a “worst case scenario” in which criminals were able to achieve an optimum mix of air and explosive gas. It also identified areas of potential stress, leading to the introduction of a modification kit that can be retrofitted to existing Gryphons, as the Gryphon2AG (anti-gas).

In September 2015, Lockpoint’s brand new Gryphon3 was live-tested in a “worst case scenario” at Gexcon’s dedicated test facility in Norway.

The pictures above illustrate how the Gryphon easily survives a blast that could have destroyed the surrounding building had this been a criminal attack.

The test was repeated in front of an invited audience from the security industry. In both instances the Gryphon doors could even be opened by a Lockpoint engineer after the explosion and the cash safely retrieved.

Lockpoint’s partnership with Gexcon also highlights the risks associated with so-called gas suppression kits, which are being promoted as a protection against gas attack. Gexcon’s work demonstrates that in some circumstances, the turbulence caused when an inert gas is injected into the ATM to protect it against attack may actually cause a much more severe explosion.

That is why the Lockpoint Gryphon3 is the only proved protection against a gas attack on an ATM.

Protect the cash and everything else will look after itself.
